Submillimeter Site Testing at Dome C, Antarctica
نویسندگان
چکیده
We have developed a 350μm radiometer to perform automated site testing in remote regions of Antarctica. In summer 2000–2001 the instrument operated at Concordia, a new station under construction at Dome C on the Antarctic Plateau. We present the results, and compare them with the atmospheric opacity measured at the South Pole in the same five-week period. During these five weeks, observing conditions at Dome C were, on average, substantially better than those at the South Pole.

Pre-HEAT: submillimeter site testing and astronomical spectra from Dome A, Antarctica
Pre-HEAT is a 20 cm aperture submillimeter-wave telescope with a 660 GHz (450 micron) Schottky diode heterodyne receiver and digital FFT spectrometer for the Plateau Observatory (PLATO) developed by the University of New South Wales. In January 2008 it was deployed to Dome A, the summit of the Antarctic plateau, as part of a scientific traverse led by the Polar Research Institute of China and t...
متن کاملMillimetre Astronomy from the High Antarctic Plateau: Site Testing at Dome C
Preliminary site testing results at Dome C (Antarctica) are presented, using both Automatic Weather Station (AWS) meteorological data (1986–1993) and Precipitable Water Vapour (PWV) measurements made by the authors. A comparison with the South Pole and other sites is made. The South Pole is a well established astrophysical observing site, where extremely good conditions are reported for a large...
متن کاملSite testing Dome A, Antarctica
Recent data have shown that Dome C, on the Antarctic plateau, is an exceptional site for astronomy, with atmospheric conditions superior to those at any existing mid-latitude site. Dome C, however, may not be the best site on the Antarctic plateau for every kind of astronomy. The highest point of the plateau is Dome A, some 800 m higher than Dome C. It should experience colder atmospheric tempe...
متن کاملAstronomy & Astrophysics An analysis of temperatures and wind speeds above Dome C , Antarctica
A good astronomical site must fulfill several criteria including low atmospheric turbulence and low wind speeds. It is therefore important to have a detailed knowledge of the temperature and wind conditions of a location considered for future astronomical research. Antarctica has unique atmospheric conditions that have already been exploited at the South Pole station. Dome C, a site located on ...
متن کاملAutomated Site Testing from Antarctica
Over the past decade we have developed a series of increasingly sophisticated robotic instruments for site testing in Antarctica. These range from exceedingly low power cloud monitors to fully autonomous 30 cm telescopes, and cover from the ultraviolet to the submm. These instruments have been very successful at characterising the Antarctic sky, and have demonstrated beyond doubt the advantages...
